SUPPORT CHILDREN'S TENNIS PROGRAMME (GRAPHIC NSEMPA, BACK PAGE, JAN 25, 2010)

By Kwame Asare Boadu, Kumasi

THE Ashanti Regional tennis coach of the National Sports Council (NSC), Mr Joseph Acquah, has called for sponsorship for its junior tennis development programme.
He said even though the programme, which was to develop children for the national team, was achieving some successes, there was still more to do to reach the expected goal.
Speaking to the Graphic Nsempa, Mr Acquah said the children lacked the necessary equipment to train.
“How can the children train when they do not have the right equipment?” he asked.
Mr Acquah also stated that refreshing the children after training is always a problem for officials.
“I therefore appeal to corporate organisations and individuals to come to our aid to ensure that something positive comes out of this programme,” he added.
So far, about 150 schoolchildren in the Ashanti Region are participating in the junior tennis development programme of the NSC.
The children, who have been grouped into Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16, are in three groups.
The groups are located at the Baba Yara Stadium, the Kumasi Social Club and Obuasi.
Mr Acquah stated “We need to catch them young, if we really want to develop tennis”.
